Looking for a new role in cyber? It’s more complex than just applying.

You want to be discreet. You want the right conversations — not wasted time. But where do you start?

Here’s our 15-step job search checklist to help you plan, prepare, and move with purpose.

  1. Polish your LinkedIn profile and update your CV:
Make sure they reflect your recent achievements – make these tangible achievements (£/€/%), not just responsibilities.
  2. Ask yourself: do I really want to leave?:
Think about whether this is frustration or a real long-term move. Is your current role fixable?
  3. Define what you’re looking for next:
Salary? Scope? Culture? Leadership? Get specific before you start exploring.
  4. Know your USPs:
What sets you apart? Think: skills, certifications, impact, leadership style.
  5. Build a job search tracker:
Create a spreadsheet to log roles, contacts, interviews, and notes. It keeps you focused.
  6. Research market salaries:
Understand what you’re worth – and what the market is offering – before you apply.
  7. Reach out to trusted friends and colleagues:
    Use your network early.
  1. Reconnect with potential references:
Don’t wait until the offer stage. Get your referees aligned now.
  2. Map your wider network:
Think beyond direct contacts: ex-colleagues, past clients, industry peers.
  3. Build a shortlist of target companies:
Where do you want to go? Why? What excites you?
  4. Research those companies:
What are their values? Growth plans? Press coverage? Get a feel for them.
  5. Reach out to recruiters you trust:
The right recruiter protects your brand and only puts you forward when it’s a fit.
  6. Prepare for interviews:
Think: technical prep, case studies, and storytelling. Know your impact inside out.
  7. Know who’s interviewing you:
Research their background, style and any shared connections. People hire people.
  8. Learn how to negotiate:
Be clear on your value, and know how to approach salary, benefits, and notice period.
